Reared in a hospital setting with her mother working long hours as a cardiologist nurse in Taiwan, Yu-hui Huang whiled away the time through her hobby of arts and crafts with the doctors, staff and patients.
At the age of ten, Yu-hui immigrated to Alabama with her older sister and was at a loss with the new language and culture. She sought refuge in art as she struggled with verbal expression and assimilation. Through art, communication and cultural barriers were transcended and even eliminated. With the support and encouragement of mentors and peers, her interest in art developed beyond a mere hobby.
With her other major interest in the medical sciences, she double majored in Art and Biology and minored in Art History and Chemistry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham following the pre-medicine tract. Upon discovering the field of medical illustration junior year of college, she no longer felt torn between her creative and analytical sides.
She is currently working toward her master's in Biomedical Visualization at the University of Illinois at Chicago¡Xone of only five medical illustration graduate programs in North America. Specializing in Clinical Anaplastology and 3D Biomedical Visualization, she plans to work in a clinical setting with patients and healthcare professionals while using her hands for the creation of prostheses, and virtually visualizing surgical implants.
